What Is a Sound Attenuated Pump Enclosure And When Do You Need One?

What Is a Sound Attenuated Pump Enclosure?

If you've ever run a diesel pump package on an urban job site, near a residential area, or on an oilfield with sound ordinances, you've run into the noise problem. Standard pump packages are loud — typically in the range of 85 to 100 decibels at close range. That's a problem when the job site is in a city, near a hospital or school, or in a jurisdiction with enforced sound regulations.

A sound attenuated pump enclosure — sometimes called a silenced enclosure or quiet pack — is a fabricated steel housing built around the engine and pump assembly specifically to reduce noise output while maintaining full operational efficiency. The enclosure uses acoustic insulation, ventilation design, and structural damping to absorb and redirect sound. A well-built unit can reduce noise output by 15 to 25 decibels compared to an open unit — enough to meet most municipal and oilfield sound ordinances.

When do you need one?

Sound attenuated enclosures are typically specified for urban construction dewatering, sewer bypass projects in populated areas, oilfield applications in counties with sound ordinances, hospital and data center mechanical flushing applications, and any job site where equipment noise creates a compliance or neighbor relations issue. For rental companies, keeping sound attenuated units in the fleet is increasingly a requirement — major contractors will spec them by default on urban projects.

What to look for in a sound attenuated pump package:

Not all enclosures are built the same. Key considerations include ventilation design — the unit needs to breathe without leaking sound — access panel placement for maintenance without removing the enclosure, and structural integrity for a rental environment where the unit will be loaded, transported, and deployed repeatedly. RWN designs and fabricates sound attenuated enclosures in-house at our Springtown, Texas facility, engineered specifically for the pump and engine combination inside — not a one-size-fits-all aftermarket box.
